Last week I said to my oldest daughter, "Do you want to help me get out the Easter decorations?" Simple statement, didn't really think much of it until we opened the Easter box and saw our decorations supplies. Easter baskets, plastic eggs and Easter grass. Perfect. This had to be remedied. I have seen those beautiful decorative birdcages around and that got me really wanting a birdcage. Only problem was buying a birdcage costs money. Scrap that idea. I just couldn't get it out of my head though. So I decided that I would try to make one.
I started with some 16 gauge silver wire and made a circle. Then I used two pieces of wire crisscrossed for the dome of the birdcage. Next I added two more pieces of wire in between both of the first two. About a third of the way up, I wrapped a piece of wire around the outside of the birdcage. Attached it with small pieces of wire and repeated about two thirds of the way up as well. I made a circle for the top and that was it. Mini Easter birdcage.
But what would a birdcage be without a bird? Since this birdcage is small, I needed a small bird as well. I went to a few stores but the best alternative I could find was a little hummingbird at Joann's. Poor little hummingbird. I felt kind of bad taking of the wings but I tried not to become too emotional.
I took apart the hummingbird so that it looked like a regular little bird.
Gathered my supplies:
I first tried using glue and blue glitter but it was still pretty see through so you could see the green and yellow head. Not exactly what I pictured. I got some slate blue craft paint and painted the body and the tail. Before the paint dried, I poured the glitter on top. It worked perfectly! Using a toothpick I painted the eyes black and the beak brown. The hummingbird came with a little wire sticking out of it about the thickness of a paperclip. I bent it to resemble feet and stuck it in.
Oh! What a sweet little bird. My oldest named it Hawaii. They love getting it down and seeing it inside the birdcage. It will make a good addition to our Easter shelf that I am putting together.
