3-D Cardboard Star

I have one thing from my Fourth of July mantel done, wahoo! I better get cracken cause the 4th is just around the corner! If you are in a Independence Day mode too, why not make one of these fun 3-D cardboard stars!

Here is what I did: Grab an empty box of cereal.  Trace and cut out two stars.  Score both stars from their tips to the indented parts (5 times each star). Push the stars out on the score lines by the tips and push in by the indented parts.


If that doesn't make sense to you, head over and follow this tutorial.

Glue the stars together. I used hot glue.


Once dry, spray paint them your color of choice. Distress with ink if desired.

    You are such a life saver. I was wanting to make a bunch of stars like that in different sizes from my family room and stuff, so I was planning on search the internet tonight for some inspiration and then I just happen to come across this at TT&J so I didn't even have to look.     I just used this same technique on a project I did. I love that you made such a large star! It does not look like cardboard at all! I LOVE it! Visiting from TT&J.

    This is fabulous! I love those big tin stars I've been seeing in stores...but I just can't justify the price tag, cardboard definitely fits in my budget!

    I would have never thought my empty cereal boxes could turn into a super cute decoration! It looks amazing and I am going to try it. Can I ask you how you used ink to distress it? Did you use a marker? I've never done anything like this before, but I am so impressed with these I would love to try them!

    I wonder how this would look if, instead of cardboard, you glued a doily to a sheet of clear, thin plastic, then made the star? Thin enough to cut out of course, similar to the stuff they use on overhead projectors.
    I'd guess it would make a lace star of some beauty.
    A little glitter on the points perhaps.....:-)

    What a creative idea! Thanks for sharing! I made some following your instructions. The only thing I changed was gluing all around the bottom, then filling it with shredded paper (which I just recycled from the shredder) to help maintain its shape, which worked out quite well. :)

    It starts with draw or trace a star....hmmm. wonder how you do that! My stars are not very good. Did you use a print of a star or did you free hand it? Any ideas from anyone on where to get a star template to use on this wonderful project?

    Wow. This really looks so amazing and the fact that it was made from cereal box makes it even better. This is just a perfect simple project especially that the holidays are nearing. Imagine a Christmas tree filled with such beautiful stars! Thank you for sharing this inspiration, even to those who are thinking of ways on how to re-use or repurpose with using shredding Houston papers for instance. Again, this is just amazing.
